Someone’s shadow falls on the wall when no one is there. At twelve minutes past three, footsteps are heard; slow, measured, as if someone is coming from a long way away and is tired. You sit on the bed, holding your breath; you know that if you call, it will answer, but you will never sleep alone again. The supernatural forces are here; not in the empty tomb and the dark forest, but in the space between two blinks, in the silence after a “goodbye” when no one returns, in the sudden scent of jasmine that no one has planted for twenty years.
